Broward Judge Sets $400,000 for 19-year-old Accused of Burglaries in Hollywood, Miramar

On Behalf of | Dec 18, 2014 | Criminal Charges |

On November 19, 2014, a 67-year-old resident arrived to his Hollywood home to find three men burglarizing his house. Kevin O’Brien Lewis, 19, was arrested after the homeowner him identified as one of the three burglars. As it turns out, his fingerprints were also on a jewelry box in the living room. The two other men were also arrested, but they are juveniles.

Lewis is facing charges of grand theft and burglary of an occupied dwelling and being held on $400,000 bond. Judge John Hurley citied Lewis’ known gang affiliation along with his substantial juvenile record when he set the bond. In addition, the judge pointed out that the gang has about 100 members and has seemingly made a business out of burglarizing homes.

Adding to the case against Lewis, the Broward Sheriff’s Burglary Apprehension Team was conducting a surveillance operation when they witnessed Lewis and the two juveniles breaking into a home in Miami Gardens. Lewis is suspected of several break-ins throughout Broward County over the last couple of years.

Lewis is being represented by Broward Assistant Public Defender Dale Miller. Miller asked the judge to order detectives to not have contact with his client. Judge Hurley denied the request, but did acknowledge Lewis’ right to have an attorney present when he gives statements, which the judge said he would strictly enforce.

We have certain rights that must be protected throughout the criminal law case process. It looks as if Lewis’ attorney is on the right track to ensuring his client has a fair trial. Without proper representation, a person can unknowingly say something to a detective that will incriminate them. Always seek the advice of a lawyer.
