Finding ways to solve crimes in a quicker, more efficient way is very important to law enforcement. A new partnership with Ring, a high-tech doorbell company owned by Amazon, might be lighting the way for law enforcement to have better access to video surveillance in neighborhoods after a crime has been committed.

How the partnership works:

Law enforcement officials wouldn’t have complete access to Ring’s video archives or feed. In the event that a crime is committed, officials would be able to contact specific parameters of Ring users to request approval to view their video feeds. If access is granted, then they would be able to see just the segments of the video that would pertain to the investigation. Users are free to deny the sharing of their Ring feed.

Under the Ring Company’s umbrella is an app called Neighbors that allows those with the app in the area to communicate with each other. Whether a Ring owner or not, the ability to post, share video, and alerts is available to anyone on the app. This app also allows law enforcement to connect with users in the app as a more efficient way to canvas an area after a crime. It also allows the police to send out an alert to inform users of any potential threats that may be lurking as well as requests to view any footage that they may have that could be beneficial to the investigation.

Where are these partnerships taking place?

Though Miami has taken part in their kinds of partnerships before, typically on a case by case basis, this new initiative is mainly taking place in Central Florida where law enforcement agencies teaming up with Ring include the Orlando Police Department, Ocoee Police Department, Davenport Police Department, and the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. Of the more than 400 law enforcement agencies partnered with Ring, over 50 are in Florida.
