Former Mayor and Radio Host Convicted of Mortgage Fraud Sentenced to 5.5 Years

Ex-Mayor of North Miami, Lucie Tondreau, was convicted for her role in a mortgage fraud scheme conducted prior to her taking office. The charismatic public figure used her status, especially within the Haitian community of which she was a part of, to defraud citizens and banks to the tune of $11 million.

Former DCF Employee Charged with Six Felony Counts of Official Misconduct

On Wednesday, March 18, 2015, former Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) employee, Shani Smith was surrendered to police. She is facing six felony counts of official misconduct. The charges stem from a case Smith worked in that began in November 2012, in which a mother, Catalina Bruno, was charged with driving under the influence and child neglect.

Clinic Crooks Busted in Multi-Million Dollar Healthcare Fraud Scheme

A whopping 14 individuals were arrested on Wednesday, March 11 in connection with a healthcare fraud scheme that scammed more than $130 million from major public companies, the city of Miami, and Miami-Dade County public schools. They are being accused of submitting false claims for pain injections to treat knee and back pain. The insurance companies that were defrauded mainly include major entities such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare and Cigna.

South Florida Man who Helped Smuggle Baseball Star Yasiel Puig from Cuba Sentenced to One Month in Prison

On Friday, March 6 Gilberto Suarez of South Florida was sentenced to one month in prison plus five months of house arrest for his role in smuggling baseball star Yasiel Puig from Cuba. Suarez's plea agreement also mandates that he no longer be involved in Aldemys Diaz's contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. Diaz is also from Cuba.

Psychiatrist Found Guilty as Medicare Fraud Convictions Continue

Psychiatrist Barry Kaplowitz was convicted by a jury yesterday in another case of Medicare fraud In South Florida. Kaplowoitz was on the payroll at Hollywood Pavilion, a Broward County psychiatric facility. The same jury also found Tiffany Foster, who had served in an administrative capacity at the same facility guilty. Hollywood Pavilion, has the subject of a prominent Medicare fraud case.
