Broward Sheriff’s Department officers have arrested Mark Jusevic on charges of DUI manslaughter, failure to render aid, and failure to remain at an accident scene involving a death. The charges are in connection to a deadly accident that took place on Sunday, December 20 at a Deerfield Beach bus stop that killed Jamie Lynn Honaker.
Investigators allege that Jusevic was driving a GMC Safarai when it jumped the curb and struck Honaker. Honaker died at the scene. In addition, they said that Jusevic continued driving for two blocks before stopping. When he spoke with investigators, they noted that he showed signs of impairment.
The charges against Jusevic are very serious. Whether the charges will stand will depend on a multitude of factors including what he said to the detectives upon questioning, handling of evidence, witnesses, etc. In the meantime, Jusevic is being held on $102,000 bond.
DUI arrests in Florida are made to protect citizens, but sometimes the person arrested is falsely accused. According to Florida DMV records there were 55,722 DUI tickets issued in Florida in 2011. In addition, there were 33,625 DUI convictions in Florida in 2011. The penalties of a DUI conviction depend on how many DUI convictions the individual has.
Even more severe is the conviction of DUI manslaughter. DUI manslaughter means that a person under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance caused an accident while driving that resulted in the death of an individual or individuals. DUI manslaughter is a felony offense in Florida and if convicted, the individual will be sentenced to a minimum prison term of four years.
